Pardon me if this is lengthy, but according to their web site "the mission of the Alabama Historical Commission is to foster an awareness of the value of historical structures, sites and objects that reflect the heritage of all Alabamians and to facilitate the preservation and documentation of the resources for the use, enjoyment and education of present and future generations." Even their 1999 "Places In Peril" list includes shipwrecks off the Alabama Coast. Surely our Sand Island Lighthouse is equally important!
