I think this is an incredible idea! There is a similar bird sanctuary in the bay at Charleston, and it has turned out to be a major bird sanctuary, recreational area (people pull up there for a rest from boating, kayaking, etc). But I wonder what would be the environmental impact of such a move. Where would all the dregde spoil go during/after a hurricane? I'd hate to see what's left of Sand Island, just northwest of the lighthouse or the beaches of Dauphin Island, be spoiled into the bargain. This should definitely be investigated as a part of the total solution.
